My people came across the Carolinas

Down thru Georgia to the green hills of Alabama

Hard men and strong women, they cleared the thickets,

Plant crops, and raised families

Built a noble civilization on their adopted soil,

This Sacred Soil of Alabama

When their rights were threatened, created a new nation

Dared defend their rights against all odds

With an unshakable Christian Faith

Sacrificed blood, fortune, and sacred honor

To keep the invaders boot off the precious soil,

This Sacred Soil of Alabama

Many generations have lived on this land

Red, white, black, slave and free

The soil has been stained with their blood

Soaked with their sweat, and washed with their tears

All alike have shared a common bond

A deep and abiding love for their native soil,

This Sacred Soil of Alabama

Generations of my people

Are buried in a small country cemetery

Beneath the soil made sacred by the blood of my family

I am bound forever to this small plot of ground

My own child lies here resting in her eternal sleep

Covered by the God-Blessed soil,

This Sacred Soil of Alabama

When my time on this earth is over

And I cross the Jordan of Death

This be my last request

Take me to that little country cemetery

Where my people are buried

Lay me down beside my child

Gently cover this tired old body with my native soil,

This Sacred Soil of Alabama
